"Any entity - no matter how many tentacles it has - has a soul."Brother Guy Consolmagno the American planetary scientist and astronomer to the Vatican is quoted as saying and says he would be willing to baptise an alien, but "only if they asked".
As I share the same science fiction interest as Consolmagno, who credits the cult genre for his interest in astronomy and eventual PhD in planetary science, I too have entertained the thoughts of intelligent life in the far reaches of the universe. I do however have issues with his statement that any entity has a soul. Can he prove that?
As a Jesuit and a member of the Vatican staff, one would think that Consolmagno would have a pretty strong grasp of Biblical instruction and dogmas. The problem with Consolmagno holding a position in a religious organization, yes even the Vatican, is that he is blending science and biblical teachings together. In response to physicist Stephen Hawkings statement that there is no need for a god to explain the origin of the universe, Consolmagno said this:
"The whole idea of what creation means is not a case of who wound up the clock and sets it going, it's the fact there's a clock to be wound up in the first place. A god that started things up would be a pagan god. The god I believe in is outside space and time."Consolmagno then goes on to criticize the Creationism Theory that is widely taught in most Christian churches saying that by taking the Bible's account of the creation of earth is turning God "once again into a pagan god of thunder and lightening." Watch this video clip of Consolmagno pontificating on should the Bible be taken literal or not.
Here is Consolmagno teaching on how religion works in a society shaped by science and technology (note it is 1hr in length)
Another interesting theory that I would just like to point out considers the fact that UFO sightings are actually the physical manifestations of demons and angels:
Elizabeth Prata | The End Time "What does this mean for the End Time? Satan is already god of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4), though his power over man is only to the extent that unsaved man will allow him in. Demonic activity is increasing as satan and his fallen angels ready themselves for their heyday with all power and authority given to them by God. (Rev 13:2; Rev 13:5). It's interesting that the AOL news article mentions the 'interdimensional beings', because of course, demons (fallen angels) are inter-dimensional. They appear and disappear as the bible shows angels doing (Luke 1:19; Mt 28:1-32; Heb 13:2). They are extraterrestrial also, since they are living, created beings who do not live on this planet but visit it frequently.
Since they have power to move through dimensions, to appear and disappear, and also to appear as bright light, (2 Cor. 11:14) then of course it would be no small matter to cause a bright light to appear in the sky and zoom this way or that. And since satan will have power to cause lying wonders, it would be no small matter for the fallen angels (demons) to make a craft appear in the sky and startle the locals. Someday they may land and say "take me to your leader."
If we are still on earth when that happens who would you tell them your leader is?" (full article ,with my reply and the author's response here )
In closing, I would just like to point out some important teachings from the Bible:
Matthew 7:14-16 (KJV) "14Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. 15Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?"
Do not believe everything that you hear or read, unless it is from the Bible. While I will admit the Bible is full of allegory, allusions, poetic imagery, analogies, and illustrative text, I also take the Bible at face value. If God says he made the universe then God made the universe; who are we, as insignificant sinful humans, to dare question the validity of Divine transcription?
Revelation 22:18 - "I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book."
If you feel as if you are being called to ministry, be it missions, preaching, or gazing at the moon for whatever reason, BE SURE YOU AND GOD ARE ON THE SAME PAGE!
